COURSE 1: THE FOUNDATION — Threat Detection Principles
You don’t rise to the occasion. You fall to the level of your training.
This is the foundation course of the CMAA Tactical Personal Safety Certification — a 12-course program built from three decades of practitioner-grade threat detection work, adapted for civilians who refuse to be hunted.
Course 1 teaches you the operating system: how to see what’s actually in front of you, how to read fear as information instead of weakness, how to count to three and move before the fourth data point lands. Five anchor lessons. Four K.P.B.A. deep dives. A 7-day field drill series. A bonus library on being followed, concealed firearm mindset, and improvised weapons. One live class — three hours, in person at Cervizzi’s Martial Arts Academy, where the methodology becomes muscle.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
– The Urban Combat Hunter S.A.F.E. Mindset (Situational Awareness For Everyone) — the stance that governs everything
– The 1+1+1 = ACTION framework — the decision engine of the entire program
– Pull on the Thread — disrupting the predator’s event chain before it closes
– 70% Now Beats 100% Too Late — decision velocity over hesitation
– The full K.P.B.A. framework — Kinesics, Proxemics, Biometrics, Atmospherics
– 7-day integrated field drills you can run anywhere
– Bonus library: surveillance countermeasures, carry mindset, improvised weapons
WHO THIS IS FOR
Parents who refuse to be soft targets. Professionals who travel. Anyone who has ever walked through a parking lot and felt the prickle on the back of their neck and ignored it. Open to ages 14+.
WHAT YOU WILL GET
– 14 lessons, all with custom downloadable worksheet PDFs
– 1-year access to the full online library
– 3-hour live class — in-person training at Cervizzis Martial Arts Academy

Train with intent. Move with confidence.

Founder, CMAA Tactical
The story that became the foundation of every CMAA Tactical training: a Hawaii parking lot, a man who wouldn't blink, and the moment that taught me threat detection is not paranoia — it's a discipline. Plus your roadmap for Course 1 and your pre-class field assignment for May 16.
There are a lot of egos buried six feet under. The story of how a grandmaster walked away from technique, what happened in a Houston gym that changed my teaching forever, and why "Situational Awareness For Everyone" is the operating system this entire course is built on.
The Rule Of 3: The decision engine of the entire program. You learned to see in Lesson 1. You learned to feel in Lesson 2. In Lesson 3, you learn what to do with what you saw and felt — and you learn it through the night Anuhea's chair was almost the last place she ever sat.
Violence is not a moment. Violence is a process — and every process has stages, dependencies, and weak links. This lesson teaches you to see the chain before it closes around you, and to pull on the one small thread that makes the whole thing come apart in your hands.
The principle that governs every decision in this program. Pre-incident windows do not give you certainty — they give you fragments. This lesson trains you to move on fragments. To act at 70%. To refine on the move. Because the most common epitaph in the literature is six words long: I knew. I just didn't move.
The first letter of K.P.B.A. The mouth lies. The body almost never does.
This lesson teaches you the seven kinesic tells that matter most — the stare, the stillness, the hidden hands, the mismatch, the pre-attack lean, the target glance, the bladed stance. Train your eyes on the body and you will never need the mouth to tell the truth.
The second letter of K.P.B.A. Distance is time. Time is options. Options are survival.
Every predator must close distance to do harm — which makes distance your single most renewable defensive resource. This lesson maps the four zones of human space, the four proxemic violations that predict violence, and the four moves that let you own your distance instead of giving it away.
The third letter of K.P.B.A. Kinesics is what the body does on purpose. Biometrics is what the body does against its will.
When adrenaline floods the system, the body broadcasts intent through tells the brain cannot suppress — pupil dilation, blink rate, dry mouth, visible pulse, micro-sweating. This lesson teaches you to read those tells, and to stack them with the 1+1+1=ACTION framework.
The fourth letter of K.P.B.A. — the macro layer of awareness. Kinesics reads bodies. Proxemics reads space. Biometrics reads biology. Atmospherics reads the whole environment.
The sudden silence. The collective look. The density shift. The tone flip. This lesson teaches you to read rooms the way soldiers read villages, and to trust the prickle that has been trying to talk to you your whole life.
Most people who think they are being followed are not.
But some are — and almost everyone in the latter category did not believe it until it was very late.
This lesson gives you the Rule of Three Turns verification protocol, the signatures of a tail on foot and in a vehicle, and the moves to break the chain. Never lead a tail home. Get to people and lights.
This is not a firearms training course.
This is a mindset primer for the civilian considering carry, or who already carries and wants to understand where carry fits in the larger system. The firearm is the last stage, not the first.
The Four Universal Rules are non-negotiable. Carry is a lifelong commitment. Train upstream first — always.
Civilians do not always have a weapon. Civilians always have an environment.
This lesson teaches you the four categories — Impact, Projectile, Edge, Barrier — and the everyday-carry objects most people forget about: keys, pens, phones, bags. Barriers are often better than weapons. The goal is escape, not retaliation.
WELCOME TO COURSE 1: THE FOUNDATION
You're in. The work starts now.
Before your live class, do this:
1. Watch Lesson 1. Take it cold, no notes. Just sit with the Hawaii story and let the methodology land.
2. Download every worksheet PDF as you go. Print them or save them to a folder you can actually find. The worksheets are not optional — they are where the methodology becomes yours.
3. Complete Lessons 1 through 5 before the live class if you can. The live class assumes you have done the field work. The more reps you bring with you, the more the live class gives you back.
4. Bring a pen, a notebook, and your completed worksheets to the live class. We will work them together.
5. Show up ready to work. The live class is three hours of direct, in-person training. No phones out. No spectators. Train with intent.
A FEW HOUSEKEEPING NOTES
- Live class location and date for your cohort are confirmed at booking. Check your enrollment email if you need to confirm.
- The live class replay is posted to Section 2 within seven days of the session. You will get a notification.
- All course questions — content, technical, scheduling — can be sent through the contact form on cmaatactical.com.
- Your access runs for 365 days from enrollment. Rewatch. Reread. Run the drills. The methodology compounds.
ONE LAST THING
What you are about to learn is not a hobby. It is not entertainment. It is the operating system human beings have used to survive predators since the cave. Most people will go their entire lives without ever learning it. You chose differently.
Welcome. Get to work.
Stay mission focused every day of your life.
— Daniel Barretto and Paul Cervizzi - Founders, CMAA Tactical
Welcome. You are about to learn what most people never learn in their entire lives — how to see violence before it sees you.
CMAA Tactical was built from three decades of practitioner work — hundreds of real encounters across cities, mountains, deserts, and urban environments — refined into a methodology civilians can actually use. Course 1 is where it begins.
You will learn the operating system: baseline + anomaly = decision. You will learn the 1+1+1 = ACTION framework — the same decision math operators use, adapted for the parking lot, the restaurant, the school pickup line. You will learn to pull on the thread before the chain closes. You will learn why 70% now beats 100% too late.
This is not theory. This is not a checklist. This is a way of moving through the world.
